Featured Player of the Month
Gary Brooks
after not having played pool in 10 years, Gary joined the APA in the fall of 2008. His team ended up playing in the Money Cup. Gary had a hard schedule at Harris Teeter that weekend. He had to leave after his Friday night session and go to work. He was back at the tournament on Saturday with only 2 hours of sleep cheering his team to victory. Gary worked hard on his game through the spring session. Gary again cheered on the team and was a big part of their City Tournament win taking hit team to Vegas.
He and his wife, Marilyn, spent their 22nd wedding anniversary at the National 9-ball Tournament in Las Vegas. Gary’s love of pool has only increased and he is on a Monday and Wednesday night team now. His Wednesday team just won the 9-ball Money Cup over the weekend. Gary started with that team late in the session and didn’t qualify to play in the tournament, but he sat there cheering the entire weekend. Unfortunately he had to quit playing on that team. Between work and family, he could only play two nights a week and he had to give up Thursday night. Any team that has Gary Brooks as a member is lucky. They can know that he will be there in whatever role he is needed and will never complain.
If you would like to nominate a player for Player of the Month who stands out somehow such as great sportsmanship, knowledge of the rules, great team captain, great teammate, etc., please send your nomination to Shelby Bates.
A patch is awarded to the Most Valuable Player in each division broken down by skill levels. eg. 8-Ball 2-3, 4-5, and 6-7. 9-Ball: 1-3, 4-6, 7-9. These are the same categories as shown on the website. Patches are awarded after the last week of the regular session. Play-offs are not figured into the calculation for Most Valuable Player. Top Gun and Scotch Doubles divisions will not be awarded these patches. This patch is awarded to the player who has played a minimum of 7 matches and is calculated by (win percentage) x (Top Gun score) to determine points. The highest points per category is awarded the patch.
Pool & Billiard magazine has made a great offer to our league and our league only! The office of Pool and Billiard magazine is here in our own backyard and has featured our local league in their magazine. Therefore, they feel a close relationship to us. Becuae of that, they would like to make an exclusive offer to our league a FREE subscription to their P&B EZine. Read the Letter from their Editor for details about the EZine and how to get started with your free copy.
Terrie Johnson's pool team was invited to Charleston City Council to be recognized for their accomplishment and to wish them luck in Vegas. Councilwoman Yvonne Evan gave a nice speech about how pool has evolved from the seedy bars of the old days and movies to a sport enjoyed by people from every facet of life. Mayor Riley extended his congratulations as well. View photos.
From here on out, we would like to invite nominations for the Player of the Month to be posted on the homepage of the website monthly. Players nominated before the 23rd of each month will be considered for the following month. Nominated player should stand out somehow such as great sportsmanship, knowledge of the rules, great team captain, great teammate, etc. We will not accept anyone who has been reprimanded for sportsmanship violations! It would be a major bonus to the admin if you could also send a digital photo with the nomination.
